Bucovina and Northern Moldavia
Situated in the north east of Romania, Bucovina represents a center for religious pilgrimage well known for its monasteries with extraordinary exterior frescos and stories. The geography of Bucovina mostly consists of hilly terrains with vast forests. Yet, it has a distinct landscape and easy access to the monasteries is assured. Do not hesitate to visit this region, an unforgettable experience is guaranteed. Just don't forget to bring your camera! You do not want to miss the opportunity to take photographs which will always remind you of this fascinating place.
Most of the monasteries date since the times when Moldavia was invaded (XV-XVI century). The churches within the monasteries have a unique construction style, with their mural exterior and interior pictures and with the objects that decorate them. The architecture of these churches combines gothic and Byzantine elements with local elements that gave a typical Moldavian style.
EXTERIOR PAINTING TREASURES
In 1991, UNESCO officially recognized the value of churches with exterior painting from Bucovina and included them on the list of protected objects (listed buildings) on an international scale. The five monasteries (Voronet, Moldovita, Sucevita, Humor and Arbore) received the Gold Apple, an important distinction given by the International Federation of Journalists.
The exterior paintings, with different color backgrounds (blue, yellow, red and green) show biblical scenes but also images of the conflicts the Moldavians had at that time. Although they are not perfectly preserved because of the weather conditions (the northern wall is almost entirely erased), these pictures represent an unique element that attracts many Romanian and foreign tourists every year.
