Bucovina and Northern Moldavia
“Albastru de Voronet”
The Voronet Monastery became famous by its blue color that adorns the exterior walls. Some say that even to this day the composition of this color remains unknown, thereby an impossible mystery to solve. The monastery, built during Stefan cel Mare’s reign (1488), has a painting of the “Judgement Day” on the west wall, which is unique in the Christian oriental art because of the presence of some traditional Moldavian musical instruments (bucium), of some local landscapes or popular vests. The interior and exterior painting of the monastery dates since Petru Rares’ time (1534-1535), most of it painted by local artists.
Moldavita and Sucevita – the fortified churches
The two monasteries represent true architectural dimensions and contain the church, cells and annexae, surrounded by thick walls with defence towers in the four corners. Regarding the exterior and interior painting, it is truly remarkable – as it combines Byzantine elements with local ones and the Romanian interpretation of some Byzantine traditional themes.
At Moldavita you will find a museum that keeps manuscripts since the XV century in which they describe the foundation of Romanian schools. In the monastery they keep with great pride the Apple of Gold, an important distinction given to the monasteries in the north of Moldavia from the International Federation of Journalists.
