Bucovina and Northern Moldavia
Two stories – Humor and Arbore
Intense red (at Humor) and green (at Arbore) are the dominant colors in the exterior painting of these two monasteries. Although they had to suffer in time (invasions, fires) the monasteries Humor and Arbore prove the creativity and mastery of the Romanian people. Indeed, the absence of a steeple on the roof is a particular aspect in their design and construction.
The exterior painting of the Humor monastery includes some of the oldest open air frescos in Bucovina. Although the northern wall is mostly faded, the south ones constitutes a true treasure, most of it being occupied by the “Acatist Hymn” and “Constantinople’s Invasion”. Also unique and valuable due to its age – the image of “Saint Mary with Child”, which can be found within the portal.
RELIGION, HISTORY AND CULTURE
The Religion, History and Culture are elements that combine very well even in other monasteries in the northern parts of Moldavia: Putna, that shelters the grave of the great ruler Stefan cel Mare; Dragomirna – with an architectural line which gives it a special suppleness; Neamt with a rich collection of church art and icons; Agapia with the great writers’ graves Al. Vlahuta, G. Cosbuc, I.L.Caragiale, G.Toparceanu; Varatec Bogdana, Patrauti, Probota, Secu etc., are just a few of the monasteries that can be visited when you get here. Each of them will tell you a different story that you will never forget.
