Maramures – A Land From Tales

SAPANTA – THE HAPPY GRAVEYARD

Sapanta is one of the most interesting tourist attractions of Maramures. It’s famous for the “Happy Graveyard”, a creation of the popular Stan loan Patras in 1939. On the crosses of the graves, (which are all painted in bright colors),  he wrote an epitaph for each one telling visitors about the life of the deceased and even the cause of death. The custom of ‘scoffing at death’ dates from the oldest times (the Dacian period) and it prospers still. In fact, most of the graves in the cemetery have colored crosses and short poems written on them. If you come here as a tourist, don’t miss this unique tourist attraction which, in a strange way and by its nature, will bring a smile to your face.

RURAL TOURING AND AGROTOURISM IN MARAMURES

As a tourist in Maramures you can choose from the traditional welcoming hostelries (all with modern comforts) or you can opt for a more modern facility where additional comforts include Phone, TV, and Internet connection.  You can choose accommodate only or you can dine as well.

Other alternatives can be found at the many guest houses or, indeed, at farmhouses that belong to the locals. The rural tourism in Maramures relies on guest houses and farmhouses for accommodation and food. In 2005, ANTREC registered over 20 guest houses in the following locations: Bptiza – 7, ieud – 1, Ocna Sugatag – 1, Rozalvea – 4, Rozalvea Sieu – 1, Salistea de Sus – 6. In reality, however, their number reaches closer to 100 and  they are mostly situated in 26 rural localities (Coltau – 13, Desesti – 3, Dragomiresti – 3, Lapus – 5, Moisei – 3, Oncesti – 4, Rona de Sus – 4, Sapanta – 1, Vadut Izei – 20, Dumbrava – 1, Merisor – 1 etc.).

The owner of these guest houses will invite you to consider joining them in your free time at fire camps, barbeques, fruit picking and/or gathering wild mushrooms. Others might offer sporting activities such as volleyball, football, etc. in the yard in front of the house. There is also board walking with the cart or sledge pulled by horses; visits to craftsmen (wooden sculpture, rod knitting, weaving, glass icons paint); initiation in glass painting with the guidance of the host; evenings or festive meals with scouts; festive nights and visits to the tourist attractions in the area.
