MOUNTAIN AND BALNEOCLIMATERIC TOURISM
Maramures is not just a place of rich traditions but it is also one where you can enjoy many other activities. The presence of the mountains that surround the depression makes it possible to enjoy hill walking and mountain climbing. The mild climate and the presence of healing mineral waters has also led to the development of a different style of tourism.
Borsa is one of the most well-known areas of Maramures. The tourist center Borsa, situated at 700-850 m altitude, at the foot of the Rodna and Maramures Mountains, is opened all year round as are many of the hotels in the area. The mineral springs (ferruginous, calcic, with magnesium) provide therapeutic benefits for the body after which you might feel well enough to practice mountaineering or other winter sports. Because of its numerous marked routes, it offers runs with different degrees of difficulty (springboards for sky, telpher and telsky). From the resort you can return on foot or by the funicular railway (1920 m long), to the touring Center Poiana Stiol, and further on to Stiol top.
A special tourist attraction at Maramures is the Vaserului Gully & Canyon (4,2 km long) which is situated in the east part of Maramures Mountains. Here, in the period 1924-1932, they built a narrow gauge railroad (0,76 m) which is used to carry wood in carriages behind steam trains. The gully, with its’ steep walls, is woody offering a wonderful landscape and the region also boasts existing many mineral springs. Today, the railroad is also available for tourists where it can transport you through the gully which is an amazing experience. The steam train known as “mocanita” has trips daily leaving the locality of Viseul de Sus and reaching the points Novat, Faina and Macarla. Shorter trips are also run on this route. It’s attraction is heightened by virtue of the fact that in Romania today, there are very few of these trains left in service.
