An incursion in legends – Bran
The legend of Count Dracula by Bram Stoker made this little village famous. Situated 30 km from Predeal, the most significant tourist sight is the Bran Castle. Thousands of Romanian and foreign tourists visit the castle annually. Today, it is a museum, and tells the story of the legendary Count Dracula. And, even if the true story is not what you may have expected, you will still be impressed by the monument.
Located on a high rock, the castle is surrounded by thick walls and protected by four defence towers. In the inner yard, there is a fountain, strategically placed, that forms the link between the hiding places in the underground. The small, dark chambers together with the narrow torture galleries help visualize the story by this famous writer.
You also have to know that the legend of Dracula starts with the Romanian Prince Vlad Tepes who lived in the XV century, and was renowned for his pre-occupation of punishing those disloyal to his throne. The Prince also appears under the name Vlad Dracul, the name coming from the symbol of the Dragon’s Order – a dragon associated by some with the symbol of the devil. From here, fiction takes the place of reality and continues to draw tourists to the region.
