The resort is situated where the Olt emerges from the gully on the right shore, 18 km away from Ramnicu Valcea. The natural factors for treatments are the mineral waters springs (discovered in 1827), with sulpher, chloral and bromide. The resort has many hotels with modern treatment clinics and outdoor pools with mineralized waters.

At 5 km near Calimanesti is the Cozia Monastery, famous because it is the burial site of Mircea cel Batran, the mother of Mihai Viteazul. The monastery was founded by the great leader, built in the period 1387-1388, and there are still remnants of the original paintings.
