Transilvania – The medieval land of Strongholds

SIBIU

If you did not visit an historical city, then choose Sibiu, where, in its center, you will find the Stronghold of Sibiu, one of the most fortified strongholds in Transilvania. The stronghold is surrounded by a 4km long wall, has four fortified gates and 39 defense towers that assured the protection of the inhabitants. A significant part of these vestiges is still kept nowadays. To visit: The Tower of Stairs, The Tower of Council, The Tower of Potters, The Tower of Skinners, The Thick Tower, XVI century (here appeared the first theatre) etc.

During your visit in Sibiu, don’t miss The Palace of Brukenthal, situated on the west side of the Great Market in Sibiu, the oldest institution of it’s kind in Romania – 1817.

The Village Museum in Dumbrava (1963) is situated near the town and remains the biggest open air museum in Romania and one of the biggest in the world. Organized in several themed sectors, the museum has 12 museum units, 340 constructions, a gallery of contemporanean sculpture, pavilions for cultural-artistic displays, relaxation areas, etc.

BRASOV

Surrounded by Tampa and the Nordic protrusions of the Masive Postavaru, Brasov represents an important landmark for Romanian tourism. Many elements with a medieval character greet you everywhere on the old side of the city: belt walls, defense towers (White, Black, Butchers etc), bastions and gates that belonged to the old side of the city’s ancient stronghold (XIV-XVII century).

In the center of Brasov, The Market and The Council House are dominated by the Black Church, the most significant in Brasov, being the biggest church between Vienna and Istanbul (89 m long, 38 m width and 56 height). It is a construction in gothic style, and is so called because of the blackened walls following a great fire in 1689.

As a tourist attraction with a cultural character, it is well known for its’ international music festival “Cerbul de Aur”, that takes place every year in Brasov and which attracts not only artists from all around the world but thousands of tourists too.

There is plenty of accommodation in Brasov: hotels with different ratings, motels, guest houses, touring villas or even the locals houses, but if you visit the city in the winter season you are strongly advised to make reservations early.

From the City, you can easily go on Tampa (with the telecabin or on the paths of the mountain) or to Poiana Brasov, a tourist destination of stature, famous in Europe for its winter sports.

In the world of literature, Brasov was the home of Dracula. Bram Stoker, born in Dublin, Ireland in the 19th Century penned this chilling tale of a Transilvanian vampire which was to later become a cinema blockbuster, worldwide.

POIANA BRASOV

At the base of Postavarul (1020 m) stands Poiana Brasov, popular with the city’s inhabitants for walks since the XIX century. This region developed as a location for winter sports and is now part of the international touring circuit. Its’ claim to fame is that it rates as one of the most popular winter sports destinations in Romania. The 12 Ski tracks (Including an Olympic track, drop tracks and slaloms) add to the fame of the resort and to the attraction of thousand of tourists, especially during the winter season. Accommodation can be had in luxury hotels, guest houses and villas. There are a variety of Restaurants, all of whom serve traditional Romanian and European food.

A visit in Transilvania may include: Cluj Napoca, Targu Mures, Reghin (Violin’s Queen), Bistrita Nasaud etc.
