SIGHISOARA, A WORLD HERITAGE

Sighisoara is located in the center part of Romania, in the region of Transylvania. The town was originally established by German colonists and influences from this people still reflect on the city today. Sighisoara is a place loved by people all across Romania and over its borders. The constructions, the atmosphere, the narrow streets, even the air are so full of magic and historical mementos that it will be sometimes difficult for you to imagine that these kinds of places still exist on the face of the earth during the current day. The whole world turned its eyes on this valuable patrimony in Romania so that the medieval city was declared a part of the World Heritage by the UNESCO organization.

THE OLD CENTER OF THE CITY

The establishment represents a constant attraction to tourists especially due to the old center of the city. The Sighisoara Citadel is renowned for being one of the few fortresses in Europe that is currently inhabited. It is here where you can get the chance of encountering the most significant historical landmarks in the area. On the way to the ancient town center, you will have the opportunity of passing through an old arcade and climbing the enchanting stairs that lead the way to the citadel.

THE DEFENSE TOWERS

Around the historical center of the city a defense wall still stands together with nine of the original towers designed to protect the establishment. These towers were actually built by the guilds from the area. The Tanners’ Tower, the Weavers’ Tower, the Ropemakers’ Tower, the Tailors’ Tower, the Shoemakers’ Tower, the Blacksmiths’ Tower, the Butchers’ Tower and the Goldsmiths’ Tower can still be contemplated by tourists today.

THE CLOCK TOWER

The 9th tower still standing is the Clock Tower which is 64 meters high and is a widely-known monument all across the region. The origin of this edifice dates back as far as the 14th century when it was built in order to guard the main gate of the city. The clock is equipped with wooden figurines, representing each day of the week.

Two angels symbolize the day and the night. In the morning, the “angel of light” announces the beginning of a new day, while in the evening the “angel of night” proclaims its arrival by holding two torches in his hands. The Clock Tower of Sighisoara can be explored on the inside as well, where you will find a history museum with some fascinating collections. You can take a glance at the old way of life of the region while you admire the museum on your way up to the clock on top. Once you get at the peak of the tower, you will be filled by a feeling of contentment as your eyes embrace a panorama of the entire city. Aside from the magnificent view, you can also take this opportunity to dream about all the places you would like to go to someday. There are several golden plaques at the top of the tower on which you will find the names of various cities from all over the world and the distances to each one measured from Sighisoara.

SIGHISOARA CHURCHES

Another must-see in the city is the Church on the hill, an architectural masterpiece which incorporates a crypt and antique tombs. This place of worship is built in gothic style with historic frescos on its walls and it hosts precious paintings and sculptures within its premises.

The Church of the Monastery is another objective for those fond of religion. Only this church remains from the monastery complex that was demolished to make room for the current City Hall. The church is situated close to the Clock Tower and is famous for its oriental carpets collection, its distinguished altar and an impressive organ “responsible” for some memorable concerts.
