The Dawn of Environmental Awareness in Romania
One hour “sacrificed” to show we care. This is the concept behind Earth Hour. On March 29th, people all over the world were urged to turn off their lights and appliances for 1 hour. The purpose of this en masse action was to make citizens conscious that each person can contribute to the preservation of the planet. It all started in Australia, as people are getting more and more preoccupied with environmental issues, which hosted the 2nd edition of the event that has now become a global project. This time around, the unique initiative took over Romania as well. But how does Romania stand in what the environment is concerned?
Romanian Background on Environmental Protection
No doubt that taking the actions meant to ensure the protection of the Romanian environment is a challenge for this country. Romanians have been too busy so far handling other issues, so that the environment was automatically placed somewhat at the bottom of their list of priorities. Nevertheless, this is another thing that is beginning to change in this country. The environment-related concerns are starting to increasingly attract the attention of the authorities, the citizens and companies operating on Romanian territory.
Changes in the Romanian Environment
Overall, Romania is rich both in exhaustible and regenerative resources. This does not mean that any of them should go to waste. Special attention should be paid not only to the rational use of the existing resources, but also to the identification of new ones. The intensive agricultural and industrial activity is seriously affecting the local environment. During last years Romania, like so many other parts of the world, has been confronted with obvious climateric changes.
For example in 2006, 9 months out of 12 temperatures went above average, especially during summer. Therefore, concrete measures are imperative. For many years, the authorities could not pass beyond the stage of debating on this theme, while the actual conservation of the environment was left to chance. However, what until now seemed like chit-chat is starting to actually turn into reality.
