The Dawn of Environmental Awareness in Romania
Romanian Citizens’ Efforts to Protect the Environment
How about the regular citizens of Romania? How do they stand on this issue? I would say not so well so far. Most of these people lack the necessary knowledge to truly comprehend the importance of environment protection. This problem will hopefully be eliminated through proper education on this subject.
Local organizations have already started to take initiatives meant to serve this purpose. Some of them target the young segment, so as to make sure these people grow up to be environmentally responsible. Take the “ENKI” campaign for example. Its main goal was to make the young generation (aged 11 to 15) aware of the environmental issues, like natural resources and waste. Although the campaign coverage was pretty low, the initiative is still admirable and should be repeated.
There are also examples of environmental campaigns of larger proportions such as the “Prizes at PET” campaign which joined the efforts of more than 2100 students from Bucharest. Also, 2007 hosted the 4th edition of the “Day of the Danube”, celebrated by Romania along with other states that the river flows through. It is meant to strengthen the cooperation between these countries in order to ensure the optimal protection of the Danube River and its ecosystem.
In addition, more and more people got involved in the numerous urban campaigns dedicated to save the parks in their city by signing various petitions. “Bordei Park” in Bucharest, “The fortress Park” in Sibiu or the “Cornitoiu Park” in Craiova are only a few examples of places in jeopardy which people showed an active interest in.
Yet, we have a long road ahead of us. Even if Romanians become aware of the importance of an environmentally responsible conduct, their job is not easy. They still don't have adequate spaces to separately collect waste and however, not many are willing to make extra efforts to do so. Authorities, average people, companies and the media — must unite for the benefit of all. Each of us has to start making a contribution. We can start with small efforts. Say… one hour of "sacrifice" to show we care.
