Brasov – Part of the “Heart” of Romania
Dracula and the Bran Castle
This is probably the moment a lot of you have been waiting for. That is the moment when we got to the “Dracula” subject. As you already may know, there are lots of vampire stories going around in which Dracula is the main character. He is believed to have lived in Romania, in the region of Transylvania.
However, originally, Dracula was a character imagined by the Irish writer Bram Stoker in his fiction novel from 1897. The author seems to have inspired himself from Romanian history and took Count Vlad Tepes (“Vlad the Impaler”), ruler of Walachia (1448, 1456-1462 and 1476) as a point of reference in the description of Dracula. The novelist chose Vlad Tepes because in reality he was indeed a harsh ruler. He strongly believed that he had to be ruthless in order to ensure order and thus build a truly powerful kingdom. Traitors or thieves were shown no mercy and were punished by being impaled. This made outlaws fear him and his rivals sabotage him, but it did not make him a vampire.
The residence of Count Vlad Tepes is known to have been the Bran Castle in Transylvania. The castle was built somewhere in the 1400s out of economic and strategic reasons. Nowadays, it is internationally known and visited by tourists coming from all parts of the world. It hosts impressive collections of weapons, furniture, sculpture, silverware, ceramic and icons. You are guaranteed to have a great time in this place full of history and mystery.
I could go on and on about the things you should not miss while in Brasov or in its vicinities. Still, it would be impossible for me to capture all its essence. They say to only trust what you see with your own eyes. So I say why not do just that in this case as well?
