Dobrudja and the Danube Delta

Sulina, the most eastern city of Romania

Another
important city in Tulcea
County is Sulina, situated on the Southern shore
of the Sulina arm. Documents talk of the existence of this settlement as early
as the year 950 A.D. The main points of attraction here are the beach, the old
houses, the maritime cemetery and the lighthouses. The town is famous for its old lighthouse which was built in the
year 1802 and was later on restored in 1842. You can also the visit the harbor keys, the Administrative Palace of the Danube Fleet, the dam Man and horse and the Cathedral. The
latter is protected by both Saint Nicholas and Saint Alexander.

The Letea forest, a wonder of nature

From
Sulina you can go to Letea Forest or the Lumina, Rosu or Puiu Lakes.
The Letea Forest leaves the first time visitor
breathless. It is a place that reminds you of the miracles performed by nature
and makes you feel insignificant in front of its greatness. Sometimes, you can
be under the impression that the astonishing trees want to come to life to tell
you unbelievable stories from ancient times.

Fishing at mile 23

If you prefer peaceful environments above all, another appropriate
destination is the old village called Mile
23
. It is a typical rural community where those passionate about fishing
can find some wonderful spots to enjoy their hobby. The locals are also
fishermen from father to son who know the surrounding areas like the palm of
their hand.

The Razim – Sinoe Waterland

In this water-dominated landscape of Dobrogea, you can find
the complex of lakes named Razim –
Sinoe. Here you can encounter various
lagoons like Razim, Golovita, Zmeica, Sinoie, Siutghiol or lakes with salted
curative water and mud like Techirghiol.

The
Razim
Lake,
the largest Romanian lake, is positioned close to the place where the Danube falls into the sea. In
the center of the lagoon you can find the island of Popina
which hosts the natural reservation with the same name.

Sunset in Danube Delta Ancient Fortress of Dobrogea

Another
famous lake from this water complex is Sinoe
which possesses a high salt concentration. On its shores the ruins of the
ancient fortress of Histria still
stand today. Some 2600 years ago, the famous town of Histria was the first colony established by
the Greek navigators and tradesmen. The remains of the city were rediscovered
by archaeologists in 1914 and the site is now listed as part of the European
patrimony. Another history milestone in the area is the Enisala Citadel. It is located between the Badabag and Razim lakes.
It was reconstructed by the Genovese in the 12th century, but tombs from
Dacia and
other vestiges were discovered in the region.

It
is obvious that the Romanian region of Dobrudja is a place where history blends
with the unpredictable nature, thus making this place a fascinating
destination. The atmosphere will help you forget all about your every day troubles
and will leave you feeling young and refreshed. It would be a shame to miss
such an opportunity.
