Vatra Dornei

The legend

As you might have already noticed, almost every beautiful place in Romania has its own legend. Vatra Dornei has one of its own and it goes like this. A long time ago, Dragos Voda, Moldavia’s founder went to hunt in those lands. While he was hunting, he met a beautiful lady, with long blond hair, named Dorina. At one moment, he saw a deer and he started chasing it. The deer ran deep into the woods, and at some point he drew a bow with the intention to kill the deer but he heard a human cry. He ran immediately to see what happened and he saw that instead of killing the deer, he hit Dorina. In her memory, Dragos Voda named that place and the river that was nearby, Vatra Dornei, place who became today’s resort.

  • The park from the centre of the town, very well known for the squirrels it shelters
  • The Cathedral The Holy Trinity (Catedrala Sfanta Treime), recently built in the park.
  • The beautiful monasteries from the neighborhood of the town, impressing by their oldness and also by their architecture. Among this we mention:  the hermitage Piatra Taieturii, The hermitage  Mestecanis, the hermitage Podu Cosnel, the monastery Acoperamantul Maicii Domnului, Putna, Sucevita( 1581-1601). All these monasteries are unique in  Romania  and represent a heritage we carry proudly.

  • The mountain ranges

Accommodation is ensured in many hotels, villas, private homes. Vatra Dornei is also an ideal place for rest and leisure during holidays, with its opportunities for mountaineering and winter sports. A chair lift extending over a distance of 3,200 m connects the town to Dealul Negru (elevation 1,300 m). So, leave your worries at home, everything is easy to settle. Just go and enjoy your stay!
