Bucura Lake – The Largest Glacier Lake in Romania
There are a few different ways to get to Lake Bucura, but some of them are recommended only for experienced persons and the most important advice: never venture to Lake Bucura in winter! The most accesible road to Lake Bucura is from the Hateg – Caransebes road, at Carnesti, through Clopotiva – Grebla – Gura Zlata – Gura Apei. Next you will have to go on a forest road till you get to Dracsanu. From Carnesti to Dracsanu you will total a distance of almost 50 km.
Next, you will have to go past the Fetele Voilesei waterfall, following the Lapusnicului Mare valley to Gura Bucurii. This “quest” ends with you passing by Lake Lia and reaching your final waypoint, Lake Bucura, at an altitude of 2040 meters. The water is pretty deep and populated with local fish species. The lake is filled by five important springs, and it communicates with Lake Lia through one channel, which carries the water with a speed of almost 250 liters per second.
When you will get there, you will be filled by a satisfying feeling, and you will surely want to camp near the lake. As far as I know, there is camping allowed in the area, but not too close to the lake. You will be protected by the wind and cold – at least a small part – by some stone walls in the nearness of the lake. The most important thing: don't forget your tents, first aid kits (you never know when you might need one) and your wild spirit!
