Targu Jiu and the Endless Column
Joining the Bucharest School of Fine Arts
The next step Brancusi took was to enroll in the Bucharest School of Fine Arts. At this institution his talent was greatly improved and one of his works from this period, an ecorche (a statue of a man without skin and showing the muscles) was displayed for the first time in 1903 at the Romanian Athenaeum. In the same year, Brancusi went to Munich and to Paris where he and his ideas were welcomed by the community of artists and intellectuals. Brancusi's works are most popular in the USA, France and Romania.
As you're approaching Targu Jiu, you will see the Endless Column from a considerable distance. This column made of iron and covered with brass, goes thirty meters into the sky. If you stand near its base and look upwards, it gives you the feeling that it is infinite.
Brancusi envisioned an ensemble formed from the Endless Column, the Gate of the Kiss, the Table of Silence that would give to the visitor an interesting feeling. Brancusi created the ensemble so a visitor that would stand at the Table of Silence – a circular stone that's approximately four meters in diameter, with twelve stone seats – to see through the Gate of the Kiss, located at almost 460 meters, to the Endless Column. Targu Jiu's coat of arms is made up of a shield bearing two lions and
Brancusi's Endless Column in the middle. The lions are old symbols of
Oltenia, as they are found in medieval documents.
Another point of attraction on your list should be the “Elvira Godeanu” theater, named after one of the best theater and movie actresses in Romania. Elvira Godeanu is well known for the “Zoe Trahanache” act in I.L. Caragiale's comedy called “O scrisoare pierduta” (“A Lost Letter”). She died at the age of 87, in the year 1991.
As most of the roads seem to go from Bucharest to the rest of the country, you should note that you will travel between Bucharest and Targu Jiu on a distance of approximately 350 km (217 miles).
