Bucharest Days – Taking a Walk Through Bucharest’s History

One of Bucharest's streetsBucharest inhabitants woke up that Saturday thinking it was just another average weekend day. Until they looked out the window, that is. The 20th of September, 2008 marks 549 years since the first mentioning of the city in an official document, which appeared during the reign of Vlad Tepes. As well as in the past few years, this occasion could not have gone by without the proper festivities.

FESTIVITIES ALL ACROSS BUCHAREST

The event was organized by the Bucharest Mayoralty and covered the entire town. It is the first edition when the festivities gained such proportions. Places like the historic centre of the city, the Unirii Park and Boulevard, Constitutiei Square, Cismigiu, Herastrau and Carol Parks, the Palace of Parliament, the Universitatii Square are among the locations taken over by the magic of the local celebrations.

Bucharest citizens hardly got over their amazement after catching a glimpse of the days when the city was known as “Little Paris”. The festivities started with a traditional carriage walk on the streets of the historic centre of the Romanian capital. This was accompanied by a costumes parade that also made the spectators’ reminisce about the city’s good old days. The icing on the cake came along with the traditional “flower street fight”, when flowers were thrown at the passersby.

CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS’ PARTICIPATION

Many cultural institutions joined the celebrations. The museums stayed open on the night of the 20th to the 21th of September, thus making it possible for those passionate about arts, culture and traditions to take their time in admiring the objects of their interest. Places like the Village Museum, the Romanian Peasant Museum, the National Arts Museum, George Enescu Museum, the History Museum are just a few of the institutes that offered their full support in the organization of Bucharest Days. The museums were not the only ones that participated in the event. Many local theatres welcomed visitors who were anxious to see what the artists had in store for them on this special occasion.
