Independenta Romaniei, The First Romanian Full Length Movie

As "Restul e Tacere" has just hit the cinema screens worldwide and it will be Romania's Oscar candidate for "Best Foreign Movie", we got to find out the entire history of the first Romanian full length movie. Its name was "Independenta Romaniei: Rasboiul Romano-Ruso-Turc 1877" and this is a historic film that has a fascinating story behind it. It depicts the events of the Romanian Independence War and it was first screened on the 1st of September 1912 at "Eforie" cinema in Bucharest.

On December 1st 1911, the “Rampa” magazine informed everyone about the initiative of making a film that showed the (then) current generation the sacrifices of its fathers during the battles of 1877. This would be done with the aid of a film, so the "future generations would forever remember the Romanian bravery".

In order to make such a complex movie, a cinematography society was needed and it was immediately founded, incorporating actors from the National Theatre like Constantin Nottara, Vasile Toneanu, Nicolae Soreanu, Petre Liciu and Iancu Brezeanu. Soon afterwards Aristide Demetriade joined in and the society got funding from the Ministry of War, as well as the support of the Romanian army during the military scenes. Also, the film makers got support from the country’s royal figures, as the two Romanian sovereigns were to be portrayed in the movie.

Needless to say that the first attempt at making a full length movie about the Independence War had found it obstacles and rivals, among which Raymond Pellerin, the chief of the Bucharest branch of film producers Gaumont-Paris. He quickly gathered a team of actors and filmed the movie "Razboiul din 1877-1878", which was made in a hurry with the aid of poor performers. Despite being scheduled to appear on screen on 29 December 1911, the movie was first watched by the chief of Bucharest police, who decided that it didn't match the historic truth, confiscated it and burnt the film rolls.
