Independenta Romaniei, The First Romanian Full Length Movie
Among the great names that contributed to the making of the movie were Pascal Vidrascu and Leon Popescu (rich land owner), producers and financers, while the most enthusiastic member of the crew was surely Grigore Brezeanu, the "engine" of the filming process, one of the writers of the script and director of the movie.
There are some documents which state that Ar. Demetriade assumed the role of director, using Petre Liciu's notebook that held the entire script of the movie and turning it into visual images. The notebook was made a movie sketchbook, that sometimes even mentioned the frustration of the actors and directors with the constant involvement of generals and the army, who spoiled some of the scenes.
In 1985 the discovery of some of the old documents related to the movie revealed the true role or Aristide Demetriade in the making of the movie: "he had created the movie, wrote the script, worried about it, got all approvals, directed it and edited it". The main source of income for the film was the land owner Leon Popescu who was really into movies after this first initiative making no less than 12 productions with Maria Voiculescu's team and some news bulletins on the side.
All of these fascinating characters can be seen in the movie "Restul e tacere" (The Rest is Silence), which shows most of the process of making the original “Independenta Romaniei” film, including the involvement of royal figures, the passions behind the art, the issues faced by the artists and the debut of Romanian cinematography.
