Putna Monastery – The Spiritual Center of Moldavia

Side of Putna MonasteryAlso, the sculpture of wooden crosses and other religious forms of art were present between the walls of the monastery to the present day. Most of the carpenters and artists who crafted silver and stone ornaments only did this because they were ordered to or for money. They weren't from Putna, but rather urban artists, like Vichenti, who created a superb wooden and iron door that guarded the treasure tower of the monastery.

Stefan cel Mare and his followers had stored vast treasures at Putna, of which we can still see today 13 original manuscripts, 14 embroideries and 4 pieces of precious metal. As Ion Neculce claims, the wall paintings of the monastery were also a "treasure", as they seemed to be mostly made out of gold rather than regular paint.

In the eastern part of this monastery you'll also find a small wooden church with a semicylindrical roof that is known as "the oldest wooden church in Romania". Tradition and history claim that this small settlement was built by Dragos-Voda, first at Volovat, before Putna existed. Afterwards, Stefan cel Mare moved it at Putna and it suffered many modifications as years passed.

In the burial room of the Putna Monastery, Stefan cel Mare still guards the holy place in his southern tomb, accompanied by lady Maria de Mangop (northern tomb), the two sons of Stefan cel Mare, Bogdan and Petru, lady Maria Voichita, ruler Bogdan-Voda, lady Maria, Stefan's daughter, Stefanita-Voda and lady Maria Rares. Also, among the important spiritual personalities, at Putna lie entombed the Teoctist metropolitan and Iacov Putneanul.
