Sfantul Ioan Domnesc Monument-Church – The Shadow of Stefan cel Mare

Between 1790 and 1800 the wall that separates the nave and the ante-temple was taken down and it was done because of the need for space in order to host more Christians. This extension was required as Sfantul Ioan Domnesc was no longer a Court church, but a central town church, visited by a lot of believers.

The frame of the stone door was extracted and it was placed on the northern wall of the church till 1937, when, after the church porch was taken down, the frame was laid in concrete, as you can see nowadays.

We consider the doors and windows exterior decorations, with the influence of the urban style of this church being felt in the policromatic ceramics. The cornice of the church is simple, basically stoned embroideries, but the façade decoration is made out bricks adorned with enamel and colored discs still glittering after 499 years in yellow, green and brown. The exterior ornaments are a combination of brute material, rock, with brick and enamel, but still in keeping with the monument symmetry. Green and yellow enamel are also used to adorn the exterior altar.

One of the last renovations of the church was made in 1992, as the interior walls were washed, in order to clear the trails of smoke created by candles, that also damaged the icons inside the church. The cleaning of these walls was done by the painters Dima Dumitru and Adascalitei Ioan from Piatra Neamt. In the same year a lightning rod was installed by the engineer Constantin Apostol for free in order to prolong the life of the beautiful monument, perhaps the most beautiful founded by Stefan.
