Izei Valley – Maramures Finest Traditions and Locations
The region Izei Valley is situated in the northern side of Romania, in the Maramures County. It's located in the depression bearing the same name, surrounded by mountains and be sure that this area will impress all newcomers thanks to its popular traditions (clothing, customs, songs and dances), but also through its unique wooden sculptures. The most impressive wooden churches in the area are those of Barsana, Rozavlea and Bogdan Voda.
The Ieud Deal Church
The old church on the hill was built by the local family of nobles Balea at the beginning of the 17th century. This church is a century older than the wooden one on the field nearby, the second from the village and one of the oldest in Maramures. In 1999, this monument was included by UNESCO on a ist of global cultural assets. The wall paintings that adorn the church cover the whole interior surface of the building and they were ordered by the patrons of the church, the Balea family.
The Romanian texts are written in cyrilic characters and fit right in the paintings that decorate the walls, underneath the windows from the lower part of the church. These texts include words of advice for believers, adapted to the religious conflicts of the old ages, in Maramures. Orthodox traditions were kept, though… This church can host 340 people and the space is equally divided for men and women, with separate areas for each sex – women on the west, men on the east.
The wooden church in Poienile Izei
In Poienile Izei you can also visit one of the most important wooden churches in the world: it celebrates saint Parascheva and it is said that its wood was placed at the foundation of the church in the 14th century. This holy place was renovated at the beginning of the 16th century and it is part of the 8 churches included on the International List or Inheritances, by UNESCO.
Fir tree wood was used to build the church and its main body is shaped like a rectangle. The roof is also special, with 2 series of ornaments and the portal has a more imposing roof. There's also a small tower with a conic roof that grants the church a noble aura. The entrance in this building is done via a double door with impressive paintings and its superior side shows the faces of Saint Peter and Paul, while the section below depicts vines. The nave is very tall and the arch was tightened by using pieces of wood on each side.
