Izei Valley – Maramures Finest Traditions and Locations
Paintings of angels and plants also adorn the door and once you enter the church, you'll be stunned by all the Bizantine style murals that fill it. These are true works of art, where colour has a major importance, providing unity to the scenes created by the painter Gheorghe from Dragomiresti at the end of the 18t century.
The artist painted scenes from the New Testament, but also some from the Old Testament, showing the life and passion of Christ. The main theme of the ante-temple is Judgement Day, one of the most important pieces of work from Maramures. The theme used by the painter is the "Judgement", that tells the viewer that the lack of morality, lie, envy or evil are features unfit for a good Christian.
The Mill of Mecles from Sacel
The Mill from Sacel is a building that's 120 years old that it's used to treat and process wool. Situated at the centre of the Sacel settlement, the mill was built on a great location, in a quiet area with peaceful people and the length of the small river beside it is about 400 metres.
This Mill is well kept and preserves the same technology as the one used in ancient times and at its entrance, from the first seconds of your visit there, you'll feel a refreshing chill and hear the sound of falling and leaking water, as you also spot white foam, resulting from the small waterfall nearby. You'll notice the "valtori", pieces of wood that have been carved on all sides and fixed in the water with a circle called "colac" forming tiny waves that aid the wool processing.
The wool treating machine is of German origin and it was by the locals “fosalai”. This is an old piece of gear, dating from 100 years ago and it's put in motion by water. It can process wool, making it soft and giving it a neat feeling.
Here are the two phases of processing: at the first the wool is placed on a strap with the aid of a device called "leagan", that uses 1000 teeth of steel. These break the wool apart and "scratch it". In phase 2, the wool is placed on a second strap and it’s selected by a couple of turbines and unloaded on a "doba".
