The Concert Market in Romania
As the years went by, the concert market started to pick up and grow at an increasing pace, especially during the last few years. 2006 marked the happening of some memorable concerts, such as Shakira or Depeche Mode. As a sign of how enthusiastic the public was at the latter, there were posters held up by fans, saying “We’ve been waiting for you for 25 years”.
In 2007, the estimated value of the concerts market was around 12 million Euros. It was then when Bucharest got acquainted with the true notion of a music festival. Back then, its name was B’estival and the line-up included huge names such as Marilyn Manson, Faithless, Reamonn, Wu Tang Clan, Alice Cooper, Pink, Kasabian and many others. It was a hit and it continued with a second edition under a different name, B’estfest, which brought artists like Manic Street Preachers, Kaiser Chiefs, Roisin Murphy, Nelly Furtado, Manu Chao or Cypress Hill. This year’s edition, taking place at the beginning of July also has a lot of surprises for us: Manowar, Franz Ferdinand, Motorhead, the Killers, Moby are only a few of the artists who will surely leave us begging for more.
B’estfest is not the only big event announced for this year. Although the Depeche Mode concert in May got canceled, the fans are still hoping for it to be rescheduled. In the meantime, they can enjoy other great performances. Placebo, Madonna, Duffy, Coke Live Peninsula Festival are among the must-see events taking place this summer.
The promoters which are constantly involved in organizing huge live concerts are Emagic Entertainment, Events, Music Management International and Modus Production. The market was recently shaken by a fake announcement of an AC/DC performance in Romania, which turned out to be a sham and which negatively affected the industry.
The Romanian concert market is still very dependant of sponsorships, as the people cannot afford to pay the same price people in other countries do for a concert ticket. Still, there is a huge amount of enthusiasm here and it is not going to disappear any time soon. We have come a long way, so much that we stopped perceiving a good concert as a miracle and started seeing for what it is: a truly amazing performance.
