The Clock Museum from Ploiesti, Romania

Pocket Watches

Now it's time to move on to an entirely different section of the museum: the pocket watches. They make the collection complete and show how man was able to tell time on the go and make beautiful clocks portable and able to fit in one's pocket. The first pocket watch was invented around year 1500 by Peter Henlein in Nurenberg. He was followed by many craftsmen, like Ralf Gout, George and Edward Prior, Benjamin Balber, plus many watchmaking companies, that started appearing in the middle of the 20st century.

Among the most important pieces of this kind there are the watches created manually by skilled English, French and Dutch craftsmen. They focus on turning mechanisms, acoustics and you'll often notice the chain mechanism in these devices, improved as centuries passed. Most of the times, the bodies of these devices were made out of silver, protecting the entire watch, while the "screen" was made out of metal. The sound was provided by using bells or gongs, in their miniature and mechanic versions.

From the first watches ever made, till the most modern ones, you'll find everything in this museum, even works belonging to famous brands like Schaffhausen, Omega, Zenith, Patek Philippe and more. The collection of Nicolae Simache museum also includes many industrial crafted models created by Swiss, French, German, English or American companies in the 19th and 20th century. They were usually assembled in Paris, London or Liverpool, each bearing the artistic mark of their maker.

Whether you’re into watches or simply love devices that are hundreds of years old, you’ll enjoy your visit at the Clock Museum, in Ploiesti, since these watches and clocks are probably the only way you’re going to stop time in its place in your lifetime.
