Orsova – Heavy Industry Meets the Roman Empire

Orsova Orsova is the city of residence of the Mehedinti county, in the region of Banat, Romania. This is quite a small town, with a population of approximately 12.967 (as estimated in 2002), residing near the artificial lake Portile de Fier I, created in the place where the river Cerna meets the Danube.

The original city of Orsova was moved, once the artificial lake Portile de Fier was created, since the main portion of the older town had to be flooded and the people were moved to a new settlement, on the southern side of Almaj Mountains and the Danube terraces. A completely new town was build between 1966 and 1971, hosting those who had to move because of the flooding. The settlement incorporated the Jupalnic, Coramnic and Tufari Villages.

What to visit in Orsova

Saint Ana Monastery

The Saint Ana Monastery is situated on Dealu Mosului, a place with an unique view, above the town of Orsova. This holy place was founded by journalist Pamfil Seicaru, who fought here in the first World War. He wanted to express his gratitude towards God, for staying alive, after being partially buried by the explosion of a bomb. Saint Ana was built in the traditional style of wooden monasteries and the process took place between 1936 and 1939. The church is situated at the center of the monastery and you have to know that the inner paintings were destroyed during the communist regime, so only the ones in the church tower were left.

During the regime, Saint Ana was used as a hospital for people with tuberculosys or as a children's camp, then a bar and a motel reception. In 1995, the museum of the monastery was inaugurated, being dedicated to its founder, Pamfil Seicaru and in 1996 the construction of a bell tower was completed.

The Roman Catholic Church

Roman Catholic Church The Catholic Church is considered to be an architectural masterpiece of the 20st century, also being a part of Orsova's rich history. This is the cultural bridge between the place's minorities (Germans, Czechs and Hungarians). This church is the only one of its kind in Europe, since its interior is shaped like a tent and its roof like a cross.

This place was built between 1972 and 1974 under the supervision of architect Hans Hackelman
