Orsova – Heavy Industry Meets the Roman Empire
Trajan's Bridge
We move to the other side of the Roman expansion war, as the emperor Trajan fought Decebal, trying to conquer Dacia. It was very hard for the Romans to capture Dacia, specially since they were stopped near the Danube, most of the times. Thus, Trajan built the famous bridge of Drobeta, under the supervision of Apolodor of Damascus. The construction took place in 2 years, between 103 and 105 and it was a monument of antique technique.
The ruins of this bridge can still be seen today near the Danube river, being surrounded by walls that protect them against corrosion.
Tabula Traiana
Tabula Traiana can be found on the Serbian side of the Danube, close to Cazanele Mici, where the old settlement of Ogradena was once. Tabula is fixed on a stone and it shows two dolphins floating and an eagle in the sky. The figurines and ornaments are sculpted and the writing is carved in stone. Tabula Traiana was built by the Romans to commemorate the hardships faced by their army as they tried to cross the Danube in year 101.
Ponicova Cave
The Ponicova Cave is the largest of its kind in the entire area of the Danube river in Romania, since its galleries sum up to 1660 metres. You can enter the cave from dry land or via boat from the Danube and this cave is accessible even for the non experienced people, with minimum gear. One should visit the active gallery of Ponicova River and the archaic one (The Column Hall of The Great Snake). The cave of Gura Ponicovei includes more levels of galleries, the inferior ones being active.
The Concretionara Gallery is the most impressive one of the fossil galleries, as is the Hall of Columns. Water and the passing of time have created many shapes and strange domes and columns made from calcium. In this cave the researchers found bear and hyena bones and traces of halstattian culture.
Mracunia Monastery
Near the road of Orsova-Moldova-Noua, in the Valley of Mracuna, near the Ogradena Veche settlement you'll find an old monastery, named Mraconia. The settlement is "hidden" in a great area, near the old Trajan road on the Serbian side of Danube, where Tabula Traiana was built. Nearby, you can see the Cazane, the most beautiful portion of the Danube.
Portile de Fier Hidrocentral
The Portile de Fier Hidrocentral is the biggest on the Danube river, and the section Portile de Fier I has an output of 1080 MW, while Portile de Fier II have an output of 250 MW. Both are shared with the Serbian state and this system is one of the biggest hidrotehnical constructions in Europe and the biggest on the river.
The artificial lake created for Portile de Fier has a volume of over 2200 million cubic metres and goes from the dam till the place where the Danube meets river Tisa. Portile de Fier has a rich archaeological, historic and touristic potential and in order to protect these, the region was included in the Portile de Fier Natural Park.
