“Police, adjective” – Another Memorable Movie by Corneliu Porumboiu

Romanian cinematography adds another success to its recent achievements. “Police, adjective” (“Politist, adjectiv”), the latest movie from Romanian director, Corneliu Porumboiu, impressed the Romanian audience on its debut this summer. The movie had already gained international recognition at the Cannes Film Festival 2009 by winning the award of the jury in the “Un Certain Regard” section and the FIPRESCI (Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique) prize.

The “Police, adjective” Story

The movie tells the story of Cristi, played by Dragos Bucur, a policeman from the Romanian province town of Vaslui. He is assigned to work on the case of a teenager guilty of smoking and offering pot to his high school friends. In Romania, offering pot is an offence punished by the law. After spending some time investigating the matter, Cristi starts to doubt his work and the system he is part of. He realizes that teenager Victor is just a kid who is trying to have some occasional fun with his friends. He is also convinced that the Romanian law will change and that, in a few years, Victor’s actions will no longer be punished by jail.

He does not want his conscience burdened by an arrest of a boy who is not even fully aware of what he is doing. However, his superior, police captain Anghelache (played by Vlad Ivanov), has a different understanding of the word “conscience”. It is precisely this dissimilar understanding of words that actually led to the movie title. Porumboiu himself said that he chose this name because it best defines the theme of the film, as it talks about words and meaning.
