“Police, adjective” – Another Memorable Movie by Corneliu Porumboiu
The Resistence of a Flawed System
The movie also tries to capture the negative consequences of the communist regime on the Romanian post revolutionary society that still manifest themselves now, 20 years after the installation of the democratic administration. Stagnation is still the key word when characterizing some aspects of Romanian society and the film builds up in such a matter as to convey this idea. The picture is filled with scenes in which apparently nothing happens, but this is only an illusion meant to support the main idea. Also, the central character, Cristi, is constantly waiting for things to happen. Porumboiu explained that he spent about a year and a half working on the script and building the main character in an accurate manner. For example, you might find it strange that Cristi never gets angry, which is not normally something you would find in such a character. This is also a symbol for the power a system has on us, so that it can overwhelm us and make us get accustomed to things even if they are not right.
Words versus Meaning
“Police, adjective” illustrates the distinction between words and their meaning, between theory and practice, between apparent reason and pure feeling, ultimately focusing on “the basic human dilemma of remaining faithful to what one believes in” (ScreenDaily.com ). It shows that not everything can be coldly explained and “mathematically” demonstrated and that you sometimes have to listen to what your heart tells you. Otherwise, you will only be left with the voice of a seriously flawed system as your only benchmark in evaluating your actions.
