Traditional Hand Made Crafts Fair in Oradea
Romania is famous for its splendid hand made crafts such as painted wooden eggs, religious paintings on crust, wool carpets, traditional musical instruments and many more. One a year all major cities of the country get to organize a Traditional Hand Made Crafts Fair. People from Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Hungary go on tour to show you the best products they have. Recently, a fair of this type was held in Oradea and we wanted to share a few things with you about this interesting event.
Souvenirs
It’s not possible to leave a fair without some souvenirs. For example, you can do your own pottery. You can make it any shape, size and model you want. It all depends on how inspired and creative you are. If you want something else just try the looming machine. Well, I’m not quite sure if you’ll be able to work with it, but don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of already made carpets to choose from. If wool is not your thing, just go for the wooden eggs. The colorful oval-shaped wood looks exactly like an egg so on Easter you’ll probably manage to trick your friends with it. Don’t forget to check out the Romanian traditional costumes: they are so amazing!
Ladies' costume is composed of:
- a shirt made of flax and embroidered with red, blue and green thread
- a lap made of a more resistant material and embroidered with red cotton. Depending on the area of the country, the cotton can have a different color.
- A girdle which is usually weaved in weaving machines.
- And finally, a different kind of material weaved in weaving machines and manually embroidered.
The traditional costume for a man is composed of:
- a long shirt made of flax embroidered with red and black cotton. It varies upon the county.
- A lap made for the long shirt from cotton embroidered with red and black thread.
- Girdle of 13×15 cm made of a strong material weaved in the weaving machine and embroidered with red, black and white thread.
- Pants made of cotton
And last, but not least, you really have to see the alcohol boiler used in the making of Romania’s famous drinks: ?uic? or palinc?. These alcoholic drinks are made of fermented prunes which are boiled. The steam which results after boiling meets the cold water from the tank placed above the boiler and so the ?uic? is made.
These fairs are organized in the following cities: Iasi, Suceava, Arad, Oradea, Brasov, Giurgiu and Cluj Napoca. Check out some of the things we saw at the Traditional Hand Made Crafts Fair in Oradea .
