Maria Tănase – the Voice of Romanian Folklore
Shows and festivals
In 1938 she was in Paris, singing Romanian folk at the International Exhibition. Then, after a trip to Turkey, Maria organized a series of concerts for wounded soldiers. Artists like George Enescu and Constantin T?nase helped Maria with the philanthropic activities. Maria received the State Prize in 1955 and two years later she was named Honored Artist of the Republic.
While her musical career was glowing, Maria played in theatre plays and was cast in Brecht's “Threepenny Opera”. She played the role of Ginny Jenny. Unfortunately, on June 22nd 1963 she died of cancer. Her funeral was a national event and people across Romania came to Bucharest to say goodbye to the artist Maria T?nase. Her body rests at the St. Vineri cemetery.
Music
Maria T?nase’s most famous songs include “Am iubit si-am sa iubesc”, “Aseara ti-am luat basma”, “Bun ii vinul ghiurghiuliu”, “Cine iubeste si lasa”, “Ciuleandra” and many more.
Six years after her death, in 1969, The Popular Creation Center started the “Maria T?nase” music festival, which was turned into a contest. Traditional music singers all over Romania and nearby countries gather at Craiova for the festival.
If you want to see exquisite and rare photos of Maria you can visit the Olteniei Museum in Bucharest. The collection contains 1300 objects that belonged to Maria, among them you can see clothing, jewelry, documents and personal papers including her will.
