Romania’s Eye for Art
It may not precisely be what you call common knowledge, but Romania has given birth to some great artists over the years. Moreover, a visit to Romania will reveal more than a few places where you can admire the creative works of some of the most brilliant people who ever existed.
ROMANIAN ART FIGURES
Sculpture
One of the most well known Romanian artists was sculptor Constantin Brancusi, whose works you can admire to a full extent by paying a visit to Targu Jiu, a province town located near his home village, Hobita. It is here where you can come face to face with some of Brancusi’s most renowned creations, such as “The Gate of the Kiss” (“Poarta sarutului”), “The Endless Column” (“Coloana infinita”) and “The Table of Silence” (“Masa tacerii), which are all displayed in a local park.
Writing
Romania also takes great pride in its writers and poets. The country had the privilege to be the birth place of the works of some dazzling authors, such as I.L. Caragiale, Ion Creanga, George Bacovia, Lucian Blaga, who are only a part of Romania’s cultural heritage. Still, it is poet Mihai Eminescu who will always remain in the public memory as the unrivaled symbol of Romanian verse. Not only did he create amazing poems, but he was a fascinating, misunderstood, spiritual person.
Maybe the best portrayal of the Romanian genius was given to us by another brilliant writer, I.L. Caragiale, who described Eminescu as living a life which always alternated between introvert and extravert attitudes: “This is how I knew him then and this is the way he remained until his last good moments: happy and sad, outgoing and taciturn, gentle and harsh; settling for little and always discontented with everything; today with the abstinence of a hermit, tomorrow craving for all of life’s pleasures; running away from people and still reaching towards them; uncaring like a stoic elder and irritable like a fussy girl. A bizarre mix – fortunate for the artist, unfortunate for the man!"
