Scarisoara Cave, Glacier Chill in Summer Time
Inside, you may want to visit The Cathedral, an ice-free room, just like The Small Reservation, where you can find Sanziana's Palace. The Small Reservation is situated at the base of a vertical wall of ice, 15 metres in height. The gallery going deepest into the cave (105 metres) is called the Maxim Pop Gallery and we have to mention some aspects concerning the fauna of the place: inside Scarisoara you'll see bats and 2-3 milimmeter bugs (Pholeuon prozerpinae glaciale).
In The Big Reservation scientists discovered a skeleton of an ancient species of goat, Rupicapra and since we've mentioned science, you should know that in 1938 famous Romanian speologist Emil Racovita explored the cave and declared it a reservation. If you visit Scarisoara, you should remember to wear clothes that keep you warm, since even in the hottest summers, the temperature inside will be around zero degrees Celsius.
The cave was formed during the Ice Age, when the mountains were covered in snow and ice, the latter being kept in this state by the air currents formed in the upper side of the Glacier. In winter time, the air temperature in the cave is the same with the one at the entrance. Old tales claim that in Scarisoara once dwelled an ancient ogre, called Solomat, who kidnapped local girls on New Year's Eve or on the night before the Mount Gaina Girl Fare. The disappearing girls were very beautiful and were supposedly hidden inside an ice palace that no one has ever managed to see.
Another legend says that behind the natural calcarus formation "La Brazi" there are two pools that are constantly filled with water. Whoever sits on his or her knees, drinks waters by using only the lips and makes a wish, will have its secret desire come true, provided that no one finds it out. You can only visit Scarisoara with the aid of a tour guide and the whole experience costs around 1.5 euro. Groups of 20 to 50 people can only visit the place on fixed time areas 9.00, 10.20, 11.40, 13.00, 14.20, 15.40, 17.00.
Scarisoara Glacier can be accessed from the center of the settlement Garda de Sus on a rocky road climbing up to 200 metres away from the cave. However, keep in mind that the road is very poor, so you'll need offroad vehicles to get there, but locals will provide you with those means of transportation or even horse pulled sleighs in winter time.
