Jean Negulesco – A Romanian at Hollywood
For those having a passion for the cinema in the early ages, Jean Negulesco is not an unknown name. He was an appreciated writer and director who worked with some of the greatest stars of the time.
His life story itself could be the subject of a movie. He was born in Craiova (Dolj County, Romania) on the 26th of February 1900 (together with the century, as he himself liked to joke sometimes). Since he was a child, he had a passion for drawing and, while he attended ”Carol I” Highschool in Craiova, he won a prize at a National Drawing Contest for Pupils. His father, a wealthy fish merchant, tried to discourage his passion, as he wanted his son to be his business heir.
During the First World War, he enlisted in the healthcare services and he was sent on the Moldavia front. There he met the great Romanian musician George Enescu, whose portrait he made. The famous composer enjoyed the drawing so much, that he exposed it on a bookstore’s showcase in Iasi. As a result, Negulesco felt encouraged to attend the courses of Belle Arte School in Bucharest in 1919.
His father continued to disagree with the path his son seemed to follow and offered him, in an attempt to win his favour towards the more mundane universe of business, a trip by boat in several European countries and in Turkey.
He made a stop in Paris and he fell so in love with ”The City of Lights”, that he decided to settle there. The result was that his angry father disinherited him, but Negulesco didn’t care too much, as he found himself in the company of artists like Brancusi, Picasso, Soutine, Giacometti, Tristan Tzara or Jean Cocteau and worked as stage decorator.
He continued to draw, he held several exhibitions in Craiova and Bucharest and he got a job at the luxurious hotel Negresco from Nice, in France. He didn’t spend much time there, because he was fired, on the motive he had seduced one the hotel’s clients; however, the victim, a rich and young American widow was so much in love with him that she married him and took him with her in the USA.
In 1929 held an exhibition in the Yorke Gallery in Washington and started a long journey to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hollywood. Exasperated by his unfaithful nature, his wife had already left him.
