The Legend of Furnica Mountain
Furnica (the Ant) mountain is a peak of about 2103 meters height located in Bucegi Mountains. Furnica is also a district of the famous mountain resort Sinaia and as one can guess this district was built at the bottom of Furnica Mountain. The Peles castle and its domain are built closed by to this district area, on another flank of the Furnica Mountain.
How everything started
It is said that once an extremely beautiful girl lived in a mountain village in Bucegi. Her name was Viorica and she was a blue eyed and fair haired maiden. Her father had died many years ago and she was living only with her mother. Her mother wanted very much to see her daughter married, especially because they were alone in the world and had no other support; but Viorica was proud hearted and thought men can bring only troubles and though there had been a lot of young men who courted her she constantly had rejected them. But Viorica’s mother was very ill and soon she died. Now the girl felt blue and cheerless as she was completely alone in the world and she did not know where she belonged any more.
One day something weird happened: a long string of ants came to her place to propose her an uncommon deal. They knew the young lady very well and noticed she was a very nice, wise and hard working person - as much as they were – who was now feeling lonely and off the beam. The ants wanted her to become their queen and they promised to build her the most beautiful palace in the world and to be the best servants ever seen. They also asked the girl – in case she decided to become their queen – not to come back to people ever again and not to speak to any of them for the rest of her life. Viorica accepted happily as she felt there was no connection left between her and the humans’ world. The young girl only asked to be allowed to go to her mother’s tomb for the last time to say good – bye. Then she left her village and went with the ants searching for the best place to build the palace.
Queen of the ants
Finally they found it and soon a nice hall was raised. Viorica was surprised of how capable and fast were those little gits and what a well - ordered society they had. The ants built her a beautiful room as promised: they decorated it with flowers and tree leaves. Viorica learned to weave using cobwebs and made a lot of splendid blankets, covers, sheets and curtains. The young queen was living happily with her subjects, taking care of their eggs and advising the ants on different issues. They all loved her and she loved them too. She never felt lonely and never missed the human society. As the kingdom was growing larger the palace, which was very much looking like an ant hill, grew larger and larger too – new ant galleries were being added constantly.
But one day something came to chase away Viorica’s and her kingdom's peace. The ants lamented over some evil people digging into their hill and destroying the palace. The queen promised to sort that matter out and went out the building, which was now pretty much looking like a mountain, to talk to those people. She told the men that inside that mountain was her kingdom and she prayed them to stop digging and to leave and never come back again. Among these men there was a handsome young chap, son of a mighty king, who was greatly surprised to see such a beautiful maiden coming out of nowhere and talking about her riddling realm. Anyway he promised to stop digging in there and swore to become the queen’s most devoted defender. But Viorica told them she needed no human defender – she only asked not to see any humans around there anymore. Then she disappeared inside the mountain.
