Bucura Lake - The Largest Glacier Lake in Romania
When you're heading out for some fresh air and just connect with the nature, you probably want all the elements blended together. Our planet has many of these places, but only a few are accessible to tourists. Romania has one of these marvelous places in the Retezat Mountains, a glacial lake called Bucura. So get your boots and all the essential equipment and head out!
Lake Bucura is the largest glacial comb lake in Romania, located in the National Park Retezat, in the Retezat Mountains. You probably want to find out more about Lake Bucura's story, or should I say myth? If you ask the shepherds that come here with sheep or cattle, they will tell you an interesting story about the Retezat Mountains and its glacial lakes.
The legend says that long time ago, here lived an ogre that came down from the mountains to the villages in Tara Hategului to steal the cattle and crops of the villagers. Brave souls dared to stop the ogre, but they failed and got killed in their attempt. Until one day, when someone finally defeated the beast. To make sure it won't survive, the young man beheaded the ogre. It is said that when he did that, the ogre's body transformed into a stone, the Retezat peak, and the palm of one of his hands became Lake Bucura. The fingers from the same hand transformed into smaller lakes: Lia, Viorica, Zanoaga, Ana and lake Slavei.
As Lake Bucura is situated in the Retezat National Park, you probably want to know more about this natural reserve. It was founded in 1935 and it stretches on an area of 380 square kilometers. The protected area of the Retezat National Park contains a well preserved primeval forest (a very old forest with unique features). 29 years ago, by the Man and Biosphere Program funded by UNESCO, the park was included in the international network of biosphere reserve. You will encounter different species of animals – including bears, so watch out! - and more than 1100 types of plants, including 130 endangered and vulnerable species.
