A wild land – The Danube Delta

From an ecological point of view, The Danube Delta is quite unique in terms of scenery, landscape and habitat. The Danube Delta is situated in the North-East of Dobrudja and is shaped by The Danube as it flows in to the Black Sea. Together with the seaside plain, where we find the Razim Lagoon Complex, the delta has a surface of 4,340 Km2, containing a network of channels, lakes, islands, forests and sand dunes.

From a touring point of view, the delta is one of the most attractive and valuable regions in the country and is considered by many as a paradise of fauna. Also, there are over 300 species of birds and the area boasts the biggest colony of pelicans in Europe. There are over 150 species of fish (carpet, pike, perch, sheat-fish, sturgeon – famous for their black spawns) and this made UNESCO declare the Danube Delta “a reservation of the biosphere” (RBDD).

There are various reasons for visiting the Danube Delta. For some, it is the amazing landscape, its isolation and peace; for others it is the magnificent fishing. Either way, it is a sight to behold and if peace, tranquility and fishing isn’t for you, then you’ll be pleased to learn that the beautiful beaches provide much enjoyment and seldom suffer from overcrowding.

 THERE ARE NINE TOURING AREAS FOR EACH OF US

In the Danube Delta there are 9 touring zones, all with a wide variety of natural attractions, which charm the tourist at every step:

  • The Letea-C.A Rosetti touring zone with accommodation in Sulina or in more rural locations.
  • The Chitila-Pardina touring zone with accommodation in Chitila;
  • The Mila 36-23 touring zone
  • The Matita-Bogdaproste touring zone;
  • The Gorgova-Uzlina touring zone
  • The Rosu-Puiu touring zone
  • The Razim-Dranov touring zone with the Murighiol touring complex and Jurilovca hotel;
  • The Grindul Lupilor-Chituc touring zone where accommodation can be organized in the locals own homes;
  • The seaside touring zone with accommodation in Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe.

The Danube Delta, dominated by the river’s waters and the many channels and lakes that complete the aquatic landscape, has only a few of its surfaces on land, (represented mostly by sand banks) and its where the small communities appeared. The most important rural localities are here: Chitila Veche, Sfantu Gheorghe, Sfistofca, C.A. Rosetti, Mila 23, Pardina, Periprava, Caraorman etc., which later became touring centers.

The small villages, scattered here and there, offer the tourist a typical Dobrudja landscape, with small houses covered with thatch. The friendly locals are always willing to share with you the wild land of the delta, providing you with sculling or motor boats in which you can enjoy the diversity of vegetation and fauna. Along the way, you will encounter floating islands of vegetation with pelicans, ospreys, or maybe even foxes or the enot dog in full view. You can stay in motels, guest houses, in the interesting floating hotels or in the locals’ own homes.
