Traveling to Sfantu Gheorghe

Sfantu Gheorghe is an old village, the magical place where the Danube meets the Black Sea. Sun, sand, birds and nature greets you as you step foot in one of the world's most beautiful and wild places. Various types of colonies (herons, spoon bills, eastern flossy ibises, cormorants, pelicans and terns) live here and are just half an hour away once you arrived in Sfantu Gheorghe.

Where is Sfantu Gheorghe ? 

Sfantu Gheorghe is located in the eastern extremity of the Danube Delta, in the eastern part of Tulcea county, over 120 km away from the city. There are only two ways of reaching this place: either by water or by air. The most practical and cheapest way is, of course, by water.

Sfantu Gheorghe is located on the oldest and more sparsely populated arm of Danube Delta's main arms, Sfantu Gheorghe. The other two are Sulina and Chilia. These arm's alluvium led to the Sacalin Island, a beautiful place to observe the local Biosphere.

How do I get here and how much will it cost me?

Presuming you got to Tulcea, the main city in the county, you have one real option of getting to Sfantu Gheorghe: by water. There are private commercial ships ready to transport passengers each day, during the summer.

You can choose to go either by a fast ship or a classic ship. The main differences are the cost and the time spent traveling.

The Sfantu Gheorghe arm is 70 km long which means you will travel between one hour and five, depending on your choice of boats.

The fast ship will cost you around 13 Euro and will take you to the Village in less than two hours, depending on the weather and load. The ship leaves Tulcea each day at 1 pm during summer. It is usually a good idea to reserve your tickets one day before boarding or buying your ticket 1-2h before departure.

Pros: You will arrive fast at your destination, the trip is pleasant and there is enough space to transport your baggages.

Cons:  You will not be able to view the beautiful landscape you are traveling in as the security measures stop you from seeing too much. Also, there is a high chance of not being able to reserve a seat as there are only 70 of them and during the main season they are most likely to be all occupied.

The classic ship traveling to Sfantu Gheorghe will cost a little less than the fast ship (around 7 Euro), leaves at the same hour as the fast ship (1 pm) but is way slower and packed with more passengers.

Pros: you can view the landscape, meet new friends, you can have a drink on board, feel the breeze and take photos. It's also cheaper and you can pack more bags than the fast ship.

Cons: You will wait on line to board, to get off the ship, to pay your ticket, to have the drink. The bathroom is dirty and the ship is usually crowded. Also - you cannot reserve a seat and you may end up standing 5 hours.
