The “B.P.Hasdeu“ Memorial Museum - Architectural Ode to Iulia Hasdeu
Not many people know about the beautiful castle hosted by a rather small town in Prahova Valley, near the Carpathians. Usually, we tend to think that a small town in the field cannot hide big things, especially important buildings. Now there’s a town who can break that rule and make you think again. That's why when you get near Campina, you must make a stop and go visit the castle.
The story
The beautiful castle was built in 1893 by Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, who was and still is considered one of Romania's geniuses of great complexity. He was extremely appreciated by important characters from Romania's cultural scene, and his story is very impressing indeed. The story tells that Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu started building this castle in Campina shortly after his daughter’s death, Iulia. This loss had caused him infinite pain, and the legend says that his daughter’s spirit communicated with him and that the castle was built following the indications of Iulia’s spirit. The castle was conceived to begin with as a temple dedicated to her memory. After he had finished building the castle, this will become his rest place. This is the place where the scholar spent his last years of life, surrounded by pain and suffering. More than that, he did not find the understanding in any of his contemporaries.
The castle never ceased in giving birth to controversies and discussions. Its building was finished in 1896, after the scholar’s death. The mains discussion regarded the heritage of the castle, but in the end, everyone agreed to transform it into a museum; his castle witnessed the two World Wars and was affected by them. In 1924, the Popular Atheneum from Campina tried to restore the castle that needed to be repaired even before being damaged by the war. Even if the Second World War damaged the castle, nobody took care of its restoration, remaining in this condition until 1955, when it was declared a national museum. Between 1962-1964, the museum was restored for a second time and on 9 April 1965 it was declared the Memorial Museum “B.P. Hasdeu”.
